Direct Imaging of Exoplanets: Present and Future

In a paper to be published in an upcoming proceedings volume of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), available online now here, Dr. Boccaletti of France reviews the extrasolar planets (exoplanets) thus far directly imaged, and how the direct imaging of exoplanets may change in the future. To date there have now been about a dozen exoplanets directly imaged. All of these exoplanets are three to seventeen times the mass the Jupiter, so we are not talking about any Earthlike planets. The author not only presents a summary of the issues involved with direct imaging of exoplanets, but peeks into the future and how spacecraft due to be launched and ground based facilities may help directly image more exoplanets in the future.
