ESO Discovers New Cluster of Galaxies in Images
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) released images earlier this week of a newly discovered cluster of galaxies estimated to be roughly seven billion light years distant. The discovery was made possible by combining data from ESO’s Very Large Telescope and the Subaru Telescope, operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. There are also some interesting features, called filaments, associated with this cluster of galaxies that may provide clues to the formation of galaxies much earlier in the history of our universe. Dr. Masayuki Tanaka of ESO says that this discovery allows astronomers to “study how the properties of galaxies depend on their environment, at a time when the Universe was only two thirds of its present age.” See more images and learn more about this discovery online now here.
