ESO View of Centaurus A (NGC 5128)Centaurus A is the name of a galaxy also known as NGC 5128. It is about 11 million light years distant. It’s not your typical galaxy, being rather loud in the radio, it is a galaxy that had a close encounter with another galaxy. In fact, scientists from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) like to say that Centaurus A is in the process of a cannibalistic dinner. Rather melodramatic, ESO scientists are merely highlighting that there is evidence that Centaurus A absorbed another galaxy. This is something that will likely happen in our galactic future with the Andromeda galaxy. Nonetheless, it makes for some beautiful imagery, which you can find here. It also teaches astronomers about the interactions of galaxies.
