Check out this link to see how India and the US are cooperating on the determining whether there is ice at the north pole of the Moon. Both the Chanrayaan-1 and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) have advanced on board radar that is probing the lunar soil within permanently shadowed regions(PSRs) -craters - to see if the radar return can yield some clues.
I’ll post the results as soon as I hear of them.

- Greg Redfern reports on a pair of rovers that were supposed to last 90 days on Mars and are now entering their FIFTH year of operations on the Red Planet. Greg will also discuss India’s Chandrayaan-1 which has been having some overheating problems but has been returning data using just one of the 11 instruments at a time to avoid additional problems.
- Dr. Lori Feaga reports on NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope reveal six dead white dwarf stars with shredded material orbiting around them. Also looking for other solar systems and Earth analogs is NASA’s Kepler Mission set to launch from Cape Canaveral Florida on March 6, 2009.

India’s Chandrayaan-1 lunar spacecraft has been testing its’ onboard instruments, including the terrain mapping camera. The ISRO (India’s NASA) has put together a 6 minute video of Chandrayaan-1 images.

To follow up on my earlier blog, India’s Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft achieved lunar orbit on Saturday after firing its engines at a distance of 500km from the Moon. This firing maneuver slowed the spacecraft down sufficiently for the Moon’s gravity to capture it. More engine firngs will take place to put the spacecraft just 60 miles above the Moon.

According to Indian news sources, India’s Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft completed its 5th engine firing which put it into a lunar transfer orbit. At a distance of 380,000km from Earth, another engine firing is scheduled for November 8th. This manuever will slow Chandrayaan-1 and place the spacecraft in lunar orbit. Additional engine firings will occur to adjust the spacecraft’s orbit.
It has been reported that the first lunar images have been taken by the on board camera but are still being processed. There has been one image taken of the Earth that has been released.
