In an upublished study, available online here, Dr. Stanek of Ohio State University, has come to the conclusion that those published astronomical papers with more authors, get cited more often. While not a very strong correlation, this study examined some 30,000 articles in refereed journals of astronomy, and was a follow-on to his initial study, which concluded that the longer a paper was, the more it was cited as well. Stanek’s paper is a fun read, and the author admittedly has “his tongue in cheek.”

In a paper to appear in Astronomy and Geophysics, available online now here, an astronomer and a mathematician ponder an alternative for the process of choosing and reviewing requests for allocated time on the premier telescopes around the globe, and in space. The authors have a seven step approach whereby peer review of proposals for telescope time is distributed throughout the astronomy community.
