Bridging Cities of Galaxies

Planck has discovered a bridge of hot gas that connects galaxy clusters Abell 399 (lower center) and Abell 401 (top left). The galaxy pair is located about a billion light-years from Earth, and the gas bridge extends approximately 10 million light-years between them.

The image shows the two galaxy clusters as seen at optical wavelengths with ground-based telescopes and through the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect (in orange) with the Planck satellite.

ESA’s Planck Telescope Gets Dust in its Eye

The European Space Agency launched the Planck telescope back in May of 2009. The Planck telescope is a microwave-sensitive telescope. It is being used to study many aspects of our universe, but most recently ESA announced results from Planck’s study of a giant gas cloud in our galaxy, about 500 light years distant. ESA Announces Launch Date for Herschel and Planck

In a brief announcement made today, which you can see here, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that it had set the date for the launch of the Herschel and Planck telescopes. The Herschel telescope is a large infrared (IR) telescope and the Planck telescope is a microwave telescope. As noted on this blog earlier this month (see here), ESA had delayed the launch due to problems noted during testing of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle.

ESA Delays Launch of Great Observatories

The European Space Agency (ESA) announced today that it will be delaying the launch of its infrared (Herschel) and microwave (Planck) observatories. ESA did not give any details, but the delay was due to “an anomaly discovered during tests” of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. Read the brief announcement here.

ESA Announces Launch Dates for Planck and Herschel

The European Space Agency (ESA) announced today that it will launch the Herschel and Planck telescopes on 6 May 2009. The Herschel telescope will be the largest of its kind and is sensitive in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The Planck telescope is a microwave telescope that will be launched on the same Arianespace launch vehicle as Herschel. ESA Moves Forward to Launch of Planck

The European Space Agency (ESA) announced Friday that its microwave observatory named for Max Planck, had been shipped to its spaceport in French Guiana for a planned launch upon the Ariane 5 launcher, now scheduled for April 16th. ESA Prepares Planck and Herschel for Launch

The European Space Agency (ESA) announced today that it is wrapping up the testing of the Herschel and Planck mission spacecraft in preparation for launch. The Herschel telescope will be the largest infrared telescope in orbit, once successfully launched. The Planck telescope is an instrument for measuring microwave radiation, similar to the COBE and WMAP instruments that NASA launched years ago.
